Your Breast Reconstruction Journey
Tissue Expander Placement
At the time of your mastectomy (or as a separate procedure for delayed reconstruction), a tissue expander is placed beneath the chest muscle. This temporary implant is gradually filled with saline over several weeks to stretch the skin and muscle to accommodate the final implant. Appointments for filling typically occur every 1–2 weeks in the office.
Exchange to Permanent Implant
Once expansion is complete and radiation therapy (if applicable) is finished, the expander is exchanged for a permanent silicone implant. This is typically an outpatient procedure with a faster recovery than the initial placement. You will notice an immediate improvement in softness and shape.
