What Are Facial Implants?

Facial implants are solid, biocompatible implants — most commonly made from silicone or porous polyethylene — surgically placed against the bone to create long-lasting enhancements to the structural framework of the face. Unlike dermal fillers, which add temporary soft-tissue volume, facial implants reshape the underlying structure of the cheek, chin, or jawline for results that are long-lasting and dimensionally precise.

No amount of exercise, diet, or injectable filler can meaningfully alter the fundamental bone architecture of your face. If you have a weak chin, flat cheeks, or a narrow jaw, those characteristics are structural — and they respond to structural solutions.

Types of Facial Implants

Dr. Day performs three primary categories of facial implant surgery. Each addresses a specific zone of facial anatomy and can be performed alone or in combination:

Implant Type
What It Addresses
Ideal For
Cheek Implants (Malar / Submalar)
Flat mid-face, loss of cheekbone definition, sunken appearance under the eyes
Patients who want higher cheekbones, more mid-face volume, or restored youthful facial fullness
Chin Implants (Mentoplasty)
Recessed or underprojected chin, weak lower-face profile, imbalance with nose
Patients seeking stronger chin definition, better nose-chin proportion, or a more balanced profile
Jaw Implants (Mandibular)
Narrow jawline, lack of angularity or definition at the jaw angle
Patients who want a stronger, wider lower jaw and a more sculpted facial silhouette

Customizing Your Facial Implant Surgery

Dr. Day customizes every facial implant plan based on your existing bone structure, soft tissue relationships, facial proportions, and aesthetic goals. Implants are available in a range of sizes and projections, and in many cases, two implant types are combined in a single procedure (for example, chin and cheek implants together) to achieve comprehensive facial harmony in one surgery and one recovery.

Implants may also be combined with other facial procedures — rhinoplasty, facelift, brow lift, or eyelid surgery — for a coordinated result.

Benefits Of Facial Implants

Facial implants offer a unique category of results that no non-surgical treatment can replicate: long-lasting, structural change to the underlying architecture of your face.

What Patients Consistently Report

  • Long-lasting results — unlike fillers, facial implants do not dissolve or require repeat treatment
  • Natural appearance — properly sized and positioned implants look and feel like your natural anatomy
  • Improved facial proportion — strengthening one zone (chin, cheek, jaw) often creates harmony across the entire face
  • Single surgery, lasting change — no maintenance appointments, no syringe cycles
  • Profile confidence — particularly impactful for chin and jaw patients who avoid being photographed from the side
  • Combination efficiency — multiple implants can be placed in a single procedure with a single recovery
  • Enhanced results when combined with rhinoplasty — a stronger chin often reduces the perceived size of the nose
  • Gender-affirming applications — cheekbone and jaw implants are a core component of facial masculinization surgery

What Facial Implants Cannot Do

Facial implants address structural volume and projection. They do not improve skin texture, reduce wrinkles, lift sagging soft tissue, or address asymmetry caused by factors other than bone structure. Patients with concerns about skin laxity or facial aging are often better served by a facelift, brow lift, or combination approach. Dr. Day will help you identify which procedures will actually address your specific goals.

"I am grateful for Dr. Day as his judgement and quick action saved my face and quality life! Dr. Day conducted a surgery to fix the fractures I had on my face from an accident. To me who was very scared to go through a surgery, Dr. Day walked me through patiently how bad my injury was, and the consequences I might have without surgery."

Your Facial Implants Journey

Step 1 — Your Consultation

Your consultation with Dr. Day includes a hands-on evaluation of your bone structure, facial proportions, and soft tissue characteristics. He will discuss which implant type (or combination) is most likely to achieve your goals, review implant sizes and projections, and walk you through what the healing process looks like. Photography and profile analysis may be used to illustrate anticipated outcomes. Dr. Day does not offer virtual consultations for surgical planning — the in-person assessment is essential for accurate implant selection.

Step 2: Pre-Operative Planning

Once you decide to proceed, the team will coordinate your surgical date, pre-operative labs, anesthesia plan, and post-operative supply list. You will receive specific instructions about medications to avoid, dietary restrictions, and how to prepare your home for recovery. Most patients are cleared in a single pre-op appointment.

Step 3 — Day of Surgery

Facial implant surgery is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at one of Dr. Day’s accredited surgical facilities in the Bellevue area. Surgery time varies by the number of implants placed, typically 1–2.5 hours. Incisions are designed to be hidden — chin implants are approached through a small incision inside the mouth or beneath the chin; cheek and jaw implants through intraoral incisions. No visible external scars.

Step 4 — Recovery Timeline

Most patients experience moderate swelling, bruising, and a sensation of tightness in the first 7–14 days. Pain is typically managed well with prescribed medication. Expect:

  • Low-grade activity (walking) encouraged starting the day after surgery
  • Return to desk work: Week 1 (most patients)
  • Soft food diet: 1–2 weeks (for jaw/chin implants)
  • Light exercise begins: Weeks 2–4 | Full unrestricted activity: Weeks 4–6
  • Social swelling largely resolved: 3–4 weeks
  • Final result visible: 3–4 months (as residual swelling fully resolves)

The implant itself is stable and designed to be long-lasting.

Step 5 — Follow-Up Care

Dr. Day schedules follow-up appointments at 1 week, 3 weeks, and 3 months post-surgery. His team is available by phone to answer questions between appointments — our patient care coordinator and team are responsive and will not leave you without guidance during your recovery. The phone number for your care team: (425) 818-8991.

"Dr. Day performed two surgeries for me. Surgery can be scary, but both times he made sure to explain the procedure, the expected recovery, answer all questions, and put my mind at ease."

Why Craniofacial Training Changes Everything for Facial Implants

Most plastic surgeons are trained to work primarily with soft tissue — skin, fat, and muscle. Dr. Day completed a craniofacial surgery fellowship, adding a specialized layer of training focused on the skeletal framework of the face and skull.

Facial implants are placed on bone. Their final position, natural appearance, and long-term stability depend entirely on the surgeon’s understanding of facial skeletal anatomy — how bone contours vary between patients, where implants integrate most naturally, how implant projection affects the overlying soft tissue, and how to design a surgical plan that accounts for the full three-dimensional face.

For patients choosing facial implant surgery, craniofacial fellowship training is not a generic credential. It is direct, specialized preparation for exactly the category of surgery you are considering.

What This Means for You

  • Implant sizing and positioning designed around your actual bone structure, not a standard template
  • Intraoral incision technique mastered through craniofacial surgical training — minimal visible scarring
  • Combination planning ability: Dr. Day can design coordinated cheek + chin + jaw implant plans that achieve systemic facial balance
  • Revision-capable expertise: patients who have had unsuccessful implants placed elsewhere seek Dr. Day specifically for the complexity he can manage

Facial Implant Surgery Cost in Bellevue

The total cost of facial implant surgery depends on the number and type of implants placed, surgical complexity, and whether the procedure is combined with other services like rhinoplasty or facelift.

Understanding your total investment requires a personalized consultation — there is no accurate way to quote a final cost without evaluating your anatomy and surgical plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do facial implants last?

Facial implants are designed to be a long-lasting solution. Unlike fillers that dissolve or fat grafts that change with weight, solid silicone or porous polyethylene implants are designed to maintain their shape and position for many years. They do not require replacement unless you choose to change or remove them, or unless a rare complication (infection, displacement) requires revision.

When properly sized for your anatomy and positioned correctly on the bone, facial implants are indistinguishable from your natural facial structure. The most common reason implants look unnatural is oversizing — choosing a projection that exceeds what your soft tissue and skin can comfortably accommodate. Dr. Day reviews implant sizes with you during consultation and prioritizes natural proportion over dramatic change.

For most facial implant procedures, incisions are placed inside the mouth (intraoral) or in very discreet locations — such as a small crease under the chin. There are typically no visible external scars. Dr. Day’s craniofacial surgical training emphasizes precise incision design and tissue handling for minimal scarring.

Yes — and in many cases, combination surgery produces the most harmonious result. Chin implants are frequently combined with rhinoplasty (nose surgery) because the two structures define the facial profile together. Cheek implants pair naturally with facelift surgery. Jaw implants are often part of a broader facial masculinization plan. Dr. Day will identify which combinations make sense for your goals and can be safely performed in a single surgical session.

A chin implant adds volume and projection by placing a shaped silicone implant against the chin bone. A sliding genioplasty (osseous genioplasty) involves cutting the chin bone and repositioning it — which allows multi-directional movement but is a more involved procedure. Dr. Day offers both and will recommend the most appropriate approach based on your degree of chin recession, desired outcome, and overall facial anatomy.
